Zothique is vaguely suggested by theosophical theories about the past and future of the continents. It is the last inhabited continent on Earth. The continents of our present cycle have sunk, perhaps evo ago. Some remain submerged, others have partially re-emerged and have re-positioned themselves. Zothique, as I understand it, includes Asia Minor, Arabia, Persia, India, parts of North and East Africa, as well as much of the Indonesian archipelago. A new Australia exists somewhere to the south. To the west, only a few islands are known, such as Naat, on which black cannibals survive. To the north, there are immense unexplored deserts, to the east an immense virgin sea. The people are mostly of Aryan or Semitic descent, but there is a black kingdom (Ilcar) in the northwest; and blacks scattered throughout the rest of the countries, especially in the palace harems. In the southern islands, vestiges of the Indonesian or Malaysian ethnic groups survive. The science and machinery of our civilization has long been forgotten, along with our present religion. But there are many gods who are worshiped; and sorcery and demonology prevail again as in the days of old. Sailors only use oars and sails. There are no firearms – just bows, arrows, swords, spears, etc. as in ancient times. The primarily spoken spoken language (of which I have proven examples in an unpublished drama) has Indo-European root bases and is largely descended from Sanskrit, Greek, and Latin.
